From Celluloid To Video: The Challenges of Developmental Negativism in Nigeria's Film Industry

Abstract

The emergence of video films projected for public viewing came as a result of the slide in the value of the naira which made film stocks very expensive to procure from abroad and received the backing of the National Film and Video Censors Board through decree No 85 of 1993. Now that it is obvious that the production of celluloid films is virtually on the decline because of lack of access to adequate funds, technology and manpower, the video industry has started to boom because video technology is relatively cheaper to acquire. This has made more people to venture into home video production, unlike when celluloid films were in vogue. Since the country has found itself in this quagmire, there is the need to identify the positive effects of video as a veritable means of communicating sustainable development messages to its teeming adherents. This can be made achievable through streamlining the themes that are being explored in the various video films, professionalizing the industry as well as creating proper avenues for funding, screening and marketing the film through a well articulated film policy. These are the issues this paper addressed.
