Abstract

The paper examined the changing roles of Nigerian women in governance from the pre-colonial to the post-colonial era. To complement the secondary data, empirical studies were carried out in some selected states of Nigeria, namely Osun (Southwest), Borno (Northwest), Akwa Ibom (Southeast), and Kwara (Middle belt). The findings showed that women are gradually increasing in number in the area of governance as evidenced by the number of women in elective and appointive positions. The study concluded that the role of Nigerian women in governance has witnessed significant changes despite the several limitations confronting them. We deduced from the findings that female gender status is gaining more recognition among the young and the old in Nigeria.
